The Power of Sitting in the Circle

By Chelsy Phelps

There’s something almost sacred about pulling your chair into a circle and realizing you are not the only one carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. We live in a busy, technology-driven world that often isolates us from true human connection. When we are isolated, it can amplify the heavy emotions we feel and reinforce the narrow narratives we may hold about our challenges and life circumstances. Group therapy interrupts that isolation and the silence that can live in our heads. It creates a space where people can witness each other’s struggles, joys, and in-between moments. At our clinic, we remind every participant: You Matter. When we invite clients into a group, we’re offering more than therapy; we’re offering a reminder that healing happens in connection.

Breaking the Myth of “I’m the Only One”

One of the most transformative benefits of group work is dismantling the myth that our pain is unique in a way that makes us unlovable. Brené Brown calls this the “I’m not enough” story, and it keeps people locked away in loneliness. In a group, clients begin to see themselves reflected in the experiences of others. That “me too” moment isn’t just comforting it’s liberating. Witnessing someone else speak the thing they’ve been afraid to say sparks courage and connection, reminding participants that they are never truly alone in their struggles. In Unity, There is Strength and in that unity, the burden each person carries becomes lighter.

Practicing Vulnerability and Boundaries

Groups are a safe space to practice vulnerability. Clients can speak their truth while also learning to hold space for others without judgment. Healthy boundaries are modeled, supported, and respected in a way that fosters personal growth and emotional resilience. The group environment becomes a stepping stone for applying these skills in the outside world, where people may not be as attuned to our needs. It’s a living laboratory where empathy, courage, and self-awareness are practiced and strengthened, showing everyone that You Matter, and your voice has a place in this shared space.

Healing Through Shared Humanity

Ultimately, group therapy works because it honors our inherent need for connection. In a culture that rewards independence and self-reliance, group experiences remind us that leaning on others is not a weakness it’s a lifeline. Participants step into their own strength not by going it alone, but by standing shoulder to shoulder with others who are also doing the work. In these shared moments of courage and support, clients discover a powerful truth: they are not broken they are simply human. And together, they witness firsthand that In Unity, There is Strength.
